1946: The Burnden Park Tragedy

Burnden Park, former home of the Bolton Wanderers Football Club was the scene of one of football's biggest tragedys.

On 9th Manch 1946, during a FA Cup quarter-final second-leg tie between Bolton and Stoke City F.C., crowd congestion caused people to become crushed as eighty-five thousand people tried to watch the match.

Thirty-three people died at the scene and hundreds were injured.
