How do you get cervical cancer?
Nearly all cases of cervical cancer are caused by a virus called HPV.
How do you get HPV?
HPV is a sexually transmitted disease. You can get it by having sex with a partner that already has HPV.
What does HPV stand for?
HPV stands for human papilloma virus.
What sort of people have HPV?
Anyone can have HPV it is a common virus but the type that causes cervical cancer is rarer.
If I have HPV will I definitely get cervical cancer?
No. Most women with HPV do not get cervical cancer.
Can a virgin get cervical cancer?
Yes, but it is extremely rare in women that do not have sex.
How do I stop myself getting cervical cancer?
Practice safe sex, use condoms and have fewer sexual partners. Attend cervical screening and have a smear test that can detect early changes before cancer starts.
What if I have already had many partners in the past?
Your chance of having a HPV infection is higher the more sexual partners you have had and it is important to attend when invited for cervical screening.
Is HPV curable?
No but the infection often clears up by itself.
What can men do to prevent cervical cancer?
Wear a condom.
