Burning Man
Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA
31st August - 7th September 2009
Possibly one of the strangest festivals in the world, Burning Man celebrates the weird and weirder, where the main attraction is you. Described as a "annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance”, in simple terms, it’s an 8 day Glastonbury, without the bands, but with all the oddballs multiplied by infinity.
In the true spirit of all things hippy – Burning Man is a commerce-free event; no cash transactions are permitted other than for coffee and ice at the Centre Camp Cafe – everything else must be traded for or gifted and participants must bring everything they need in order to survive the harsh desert environment. The event culminates in “The Burn” – where a giant, wooden, man-shaped effigy is ignited and admired by the inhabitants of Black Rock City. Find cheap flights to Reno
Monkey Buffet Festival
Lopburi, Thailand
November 2009
In adoration of their primate population, ever year, about 600 monkeys are invited to dine on a massive table with a spread of over 3000kgs of monkey’s favourite food – not peanuts – but fruit and veg. The festival is said to be held to thank the monkeys for their part in attracting tourists to the region.
Funnily enough, the event itself attracts hundreds of tourists who turn up to see the monkeys being thanked for attracting the tourists, causing a never ending feedback loop of monkeys and tourists, which keeps the tourists, the monkeys, and the locals all very happy. Find cheap flights to Thailand
Ivrea Orange Festival – Battle of the Oranges
Ivrea, Italy
February 2010
Every year in the town of Ivrea, in the province of Turin in northwest Italy, residents re-enact an ancient battle in medieval costume, armed only with the well known medieval weapon: the orange. Nine teams of orange-throwers consisting of over 3000 combatants confront each other in a juicy battle whilst eating free beans to keep their energy levels up.
Being hit in the face with an orange can be painful, so if you just want to watch and not wang, wear a red hat which declares your neutrality and should protect you from orange attack. However, fruit has been known to go astray so keep your wits about you. Find cheap flights to Italy
Kanamara Matsuri (Penis Festival)
Kawasaki, Japan
April 2010
Only in Japan would a giant wooden penis measuring 2.5m long be carried upon the shoulders of local inhabitants to the adoration of cheering crowds. But that’s exactly what happens at this annual Shinto Fertility festival held in Kawasaki each spring. Everything with a willy theme is on offer here: penis shaped sweets, phallus key rings, dong-shaped dumplings, even vegetables carved into various suggestive forms.
Japan is also home to Hadaka Matsuri (Naked Festivals) which are held in several locations around the country and consist of hundreds of men getting naked and throwing mud and water at each other.
Note: Penis festival and Naked Man festival do not occur at the same time. Find cheap flights to Japan
