Pupils Stay Safe Online

A school in Manchester have launched an e-safety website for young people called 'Beware of Everyone'.

Year 9 pupils from Abraham Moss High School in Crumpsall have produced poems, animations and podcasts as part of a website that encorages young people to be careful when sharing information with others on the internet.

Millions of young people use social networks such as Facebook and Myspace and need to recognise the importance of privacy settings and knowing how to report bullying and inappropriate conversations. This is what the 'Beware of Everyone' website is all about.

The concern is that children as young as 6 are getting onto sites like Facebook and are unaware of the risks they put themselves in by sharing personal information. Susan Hargreaves is an expert who works with the Safeguarding Children Board in Manchester. Our reporter John Pickford spoke to Susan down at the launch.

Pupils Bilal Shabir and Asad Mohsin, both 13 years old, have been working on the 'Beware of Everyone' site and shared a poem they had written about blocking people on the internet.

Ian Rush, Chair of Manchester Safeguarding Childrens Board said "This isnt about stopping young people having fun, it's about making sure they stay safe while enjoying chatting online."

Here's our reporter John Pickford with a quick round up -

You can have a look at the 'Beware of Everyone' website here.

And for younger children the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) have produced an interactive cartoon 'Lee & Kim' to help them understand how to stay safe when they are online.
