One Month On - How Manchester Has Helped Haiti

On the 12th January 2010 a massive earthquake hit the island of Haiti. The quake ripped through the capital of Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas causing major damage. Buildings collapsed, roads were destroyed and over 200,000 people were killed.
Many countries including the UK leapt into action pledging funds and sending out rescue and medical teams. And over the last month lots of people from Greater Manchester also did what they could to help. And this is our round up -
Have a listen to our Haiti news bulletin montage. You'll hear from Greater Manchester fire fighters, local charity workers and a doctor who used Facebook from her flat here in Manchester to locate survivors in the rubble and direct the rescue services to them....
Nine Greater Manchester fire-fighters and a search and rescue dog called Echo went out to Haiti to help with the rescue efforts. Peter Stevenson was one of them and his 11 year old daughter Sophie talked to our reporter Michelle Ponting about her hero dad....
Here is the Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Team in action -
As well as rescue staff, medical teams flew out to Haiti to help save lives and treat people with injuries. Professor Tony Redmond is based at Salford's Hope Hospital and has been going out to earthquake disaster zones for 25 years. He tells us here what his team got up to....
Someone else who had been out to Haiti was Andy Hawthorn. He was part of Manchester youth charity The Message Trust -
Once back in the UK Andy and his colleague Anthony Delaney decided to put on a benefit concert to raise money for the earthquake survivors. 'Heart for Haiti' was put together within 10 days of their return and was held at the Manchester Apollo. They managed to persuade Hollywood actor Stephen Baldwin to join the line-up, fresh from his recent appearance on Celeb Big Brother. Also on the bill were local Manchester bands, a full gospel choir and a local theatre company. The 90 minute show managed to raise a whopping £60,000.
