Mike and Chelsea Biography

Mike Toolan (Stallion Firehawk to his friends) started in radio before he went to college in the USA as a mere pup in 1991. Along the way he has been a hospital cleaner, door-to-door salesman, barman and an underwriter at Lloyds of London.

He says: “I love the instant quality of radio – a feature can go from rough idea to on air in three minutes. I also love the one to one connection that radio has with its listener. Unlike any other media, you feel the person on the radio is just talking to you.”

In his spare time Mike loves to play the drums and often tries his hand at the keyboard and singing, although they could both do with some work!.

Here are Mike’s answers to your quick-fire questions:

Q1: Describe yourself in three words
A1:“Funny. Scatty. Kind.”
Q2: Do you have any party tricks?
A2:“I can do the entire Michael Jackson Thriller routine. I have no dignity.”
Q3: What’s your Karaoke song of choice?
A3:“Sitting On the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding.”
Q4: What is your favourite film?
A4:“Star Wars Episode IV. A Long Time Ago… and yet somehow still set in the future. Genius.”
Q5: Why did you choose to be a radio DJ/presenter?
A5: “I can’t dance, act or sing, and I was desperate to be in showbiz."

Chelsea Norris (or Dr. Doolittle to friends1) is originally from Australia but moved to the UK when she was young. She landed her dream job in radio following short spells waitressing at a pizza chain, selling chocolate and handing out newspapers.

She says: “I’d always wanted to be a journalist – [I] was always writing as a kid and always had a little notebook with me. The presenter thing came about by accident really when Key 103 approached me to come and host with Mike. Glad they did though - it’s loads of fun!”

In her spare time Chelsea loves spending her hard-earned cash travelling the world. She also loves inviting friends to her house and going out for dinner.

Here are Chelsea’s answers to your quick-fire questions:

Q1: Describe yourself in three words
A1: “Hard-working. Realistic. Loyal.”
Q2: If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A2: “I get bullied for this – but it’s ‘Wake Me Up’ by Avicii. It reminds me of an eye opening but amazing time in my life and I love the words.”
Q3: What’s your Karaoke song of choice?
A3: “First song I ever sang on Karaoke was Foreigner ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’  That’s a favourite.”
Q4: What would you be doing if you weren’t on the radio?
A4: “I think I’d be working in PR. It was always something I enjoyed.”
Q5: Do you have any strange rituals which you carry out before you start you show?
A5: “Nope but I’m a creature of habit and do the exact same thing every day in that order. Makes sure I’m in on time too!”

1 Unfortunately she can’t speak to animals but is a proud patron for a few animal charities!
