New Act of the Week #13 – Carrie Mac

Story Highlight

"Very few show more potential than 23-year-old Scottish soul-pop singer Carrie Mac"

With Adele rewriting the record books, Jessie J rising to superstar status in a matter of months and pop veteran Jennifer Lopez enjoying a chart-topping resurgence (to name a few), 2011 has already been a vintage year for female pop singers. Unsurprisingly, there are no shortage of brilliant new acts threatening to become the next big thing - and very few show more potential than 23-year-old Scottish soul-pop singer Carrie Mac.

Like so many other artists, Carrie’s rise to eminence has been a long time coming. Since finishing school five years ago, Carrie has been plying and honing her trade performing her own compositions at gigs across Scotland. In 2008 she went on to win the Radio Forth One To Watch award in her native Edinburgh which duly led to support slots with the likes of Sandi Thom and The Proclaimers. Musical career nicely simmering, Carrie self-released an aptly named acoustic album ‘Believe’ in 2009, an album that garnered great acclaim and served as a succinct introduction to Carrie’s embryonic talents.

Fast forward two years and Carrie is now very much a fully-fledged musical force. With a set of studio wizards behind her, Carrie’s completely self-penned songs now have a new lease of life and are primed to reach a mainstream audience. Released through independent label Protobeat Records on April 18th, stunning new single ‘Till I See You Again’ embodies everything that’s so great about the songstress. A flawless pop song, it’s a perfect showcase of Carrie’s powerful, soulful voice and her extraordinary song-writing style. In fact it’s that rarest of things – a track that sounds immediately recognisable and timeless on the very first spin. Already picking up major airplay across the UK, ‘Till I See You Again’ should, in a sane world at least, crack into the upper realms of the charts.

Looking forward and Carrie is set to release her debut album proper later this year. Containing her own songs and her own instrumentals – Carrie is a proficient violinist, pianist and ocarina player (an ancient woodwind instrument made from ceramic) donchaknow?! – if ‘Till I See You Again’ is anything to go by, it promises to be a pop tour-de-force. As Carrie herself nicely puts it, “It’s time for me to show people I can sing live, write my own songs and play my own instruments. This is long overdue. Here I am.”
